ചക്രവാളതലത്തിനു ലംബമായി ഖഗോളത്തിന് ഒരു വ്യാസരേഖയുണ്ടെന്നു സങ്കല്പിച്ചാല്‍, ആ രേഖ ഖഗോളത്തില്‍ സ്പര്‍ശിക്കുന്ന രണ്ടു സാങ്കല്പിക ബിന്ദുക്കളിലൊന്ന്. ചിത്രത്തില്‍ 0 ഭൂമിയും NS0 ചക്രവാളതലവും, zz' അതിനുലംബമായ വ്യാസവുമാണ്; z' അധോബിന്ദുവും z ഊര്‍ധ്വബിന്ദുവും. ട എന്നൊരു ജ്യോതിര്‍ഗോളത്തിന്റെ ഊര്‍ധ്വദൂരമാണ് zട. ജ്യോതിര്‍ഗോളങ്ങളെ ഖഗോളത്തില്‍ അങ്കങ്ങള്‍കൊണ്ടു നിര്‍ദേശിക്കുമ്പോള്‍ ഊര്‍ധ്വബിന്ദു ഒരു കേന്ദ്രമായെടുത്തു കൊണ്ടാണ് ഊര്‍ധ്വദൂരം (zenith distance) അളക്കുന്നത്. നോ: ഖഗോളം
